This Limoges French enamel miniature pendant is framed in 18K Solid gold* (it is not gold plated). Although this is a favorite design, this one is signed, in solid gold, much nicer than most, and in perfect condition!
The technique of French miniature enamel painting started in Limoges, and dates back to the 16th century. It was perfected during the 17th century and was mainly applied to miniature portraits set in jewelry and watch cases.
According to a recent 2012 work on Enamels on Jewelry by Lang Antiques, the technique consists of using “a golden or copper plate [covering] it with a white base. A fine grained glass solution with pigments [is then] carefully brushed on the fired background. After the application of each color, the object is fired again.”
This pin is a sublime example of this technique. The vivid orange, beige and brown colors on a black background are at once sharp and soft. The frame is reminiscent of the Art Nouveau period and has a beautifully delicate feminine quality about it. The frame is in 18K Solid yellow gold (not gold tone, as many can be found) and is stamped with the eagle head mark, a guarantee of its 18 carat solid gold content.
This is a stunning piece of fine jewelry.
The enamel portrait is signed by SACLANDIE, a well-known LIMOGES miniature enamel painting artist of the Art Nouveau period.
The piece has undergone the influence of both the Art Nouveau period, which is characterized by soft, light volutes and tassels, and the Edwardian period, characterized by lacy and fine lines. In this piece, both styles are running concurrently.
They are many facsimile of painted Limoges porcelain artifacts around, but very few signed by Saclandie and of this quality and craftsmanship. This brooch is truly exceptional!
